Oh ya, took my lunch to work today. Woke up late and still took the train. Didn't buy dinner (but did buy bubble tea on my walk home). Got some sewing done tonight. Make it in May is off to a good start.
Tonight I made this little pouch based on Malka's formula in Stitch Magazine (and book). I like her's so much more.
Apparently I need to start wearing my glasses because I was sure that the thread I used was orange! Seriously. I looked at it under light. It's not orange. What was I on when I bought it?
It's my first time using variegated thread and I like it but I think it belongs on solids, not prints. But then I also think that dark linen belongs on darker fabrics too. It's all about getting outside the comfort zone.
So, in the name of experimentation and little successes, this week's Make it in May give away is a copy of Stitch Magazine from April 2010 and a few strips of fabric so that you can play around with a scrap-busting pouch of your own (if you want).
I know the magazine is old but it was a really good issue. It has Ayumi's super cute plastic bag dispenser and apple coasters (still need to make those) and Kevin Kosbab's awesome Hello My Name is placemats (also on the to-do list). And, I accidentally bought two because I have short term memory problems. I'm even going to give you the copy that I didn't drop in the pool!
So, if you don't have it yet leave a comment and tell me what month of the year (if any), inspires change in you. You have until Friday May 6 at 5pm to leave a comment - and I bet your odds of winning are really good! Really really good! Please make sure that I have a way to contact you.
Thanks for reading.

June does... the kids get out of school so i don't have as much driving. I go thru everyone's closet and get rid of things that are too small & pack up the winter clothes. I would love to win this magazine... thanks for the giveaway !!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell I suppose I should say January because it is the first of the year and all those resolutions people make. But I've honestly never loved the new year. I'm inspired more by the change of seasons to change. It helps that you literally need to change the type of clothing that you are wearing. So I'm going to pick October as my month of Change. It's quite a deal to start prepping for the winter but still enjoy the fall.
ReplyDeleteI think June & July are definetly my fave months. It's getting warmer in gold germany and I can spend more time in the sun !
ReplyDeleteI guess for me it is October, when it warms up down here and I feel spring freshening me up after being stodgy all winter.I feel I can move more freely, and want to change seasons, clothing, decor and so on. Even the type of projects I do changes with the season, so I guess really, it is the change of seasons which inspire change in me.
ReplyDeleteMay. Yes, May has got to be my favourite 'cause it's my birthday and my Mom's birthday too. She taught me to sew, embroider, knit and crochet and those skills have given me so much pleasure. Can't imagine life without them.
ReplyDeleteI think May for me ... when the weather finally starts to warm up, the promise of new flowers popping up in my garden, and the smell of the outdoors.
ReplyDeleteMay, great weather, not too hot, humidity low, and hardly any Mosquitos yet. Eating outside and working in the yard. Planning for the long summer off school and quality family time. Great optimism.
ReplyDeletei love october. the changing leaves and cooler weather inspires me to stay inside, snuggle up, and craft.

LOL, thanks for a wonderful giveaway and hilarious post, Tamiko. For me, I think the arrival of fall signals a huge change. Even the shadows in broad daylight make everything look different, softer, and really pretty. I find I mellow out by then!
ReplyDeleteI think I feel the biggest change in myself around October/November. In Houston, it's pretty wretchedly hot and humid until about then (although last night was an amazing 52 degrees F.).
ReplyDeleteYour pouch is adorable. I love the scrappiness, and I think the variegated thread looks really lovely. Thank you for sharing your extra copy of the magazine and scraps! I love scraps.
The spring is a big time of change for me. I live in the Midwest of the US and our winters are so long and grey and no one can spend much time outside. Once the sun starts shining and the days get longer I become much more inspired to take on projects and make small changes.
ReplyDeleteWe were cleaning our basement this last weekend, after a little flooding we experienced, and it turned into a weekend long rearranging of my whole sewing space. I think that never would have happened had we started the job in January.
I guess the month of change for me is June, the month of my birth. It is always a time of reflection and change for me.
ReplyDeleteLovely giveaway, thanks!

May is a good month for inspiration. . but once it gets summer I'm gone! I'm outside playing and it's hard to make things when you're not inside.
ReplyDeleteI feel much more motivated with the arrival of more sunlight and warm temperatures, which usually comes around May to June where I live in Canada. I'm originally from the US and I long for warm weather. The less clothing I have to wear, the better!
ReplyDeleteDid you inset the zipper on your pouch? I would love to know how to do that to avoid the bunchy corners on my pouches. I also really like the variegated thread on the linen part of your pouch. Must try that too. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Not a specific month but the arrival of Spring and the better weather and of course the light! but soon the garden calls and so every spare moment is spent outside!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway!
I've only recently discovered Stitch - it's so hard to find in the UK
What a lovely giveaway. I haven't ever picked up Stitch. What am I missing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great question. I think I'm like the other commenters. I'm more spring, no month persay. This is a super hard time for me because so much kicks into gear. I want to do so much and there is only so much time. I always look for a new job right around this time.. only to add to the pressure.
I think it is January. I'm so done with the holidays and I want my house to be clean and clutter free. I managed to clean two very large closets last year. A feat in itself since I chose not to sew and to spend the time cleaning closets....
ReplyDeleteApril . . . the fresh spring air and the promise of new green grass, leaves, and colorful flowers everywhere with the serenade of song birds returning from their winter holiday!!
ReplyDeleteMay. I love preparing the house for the kids to be done with school for the year.

Dropped into a pool? hahaha! Thanks for the giggle :) This week I am really feeling inspired and it probably has a lot to do with the warmer weather. I even made myself a few lists last night, something I haven't done in awhile. Gotta get back on track! Thanks for the fun giveaway! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are right, the thread looks really really good on the solid! I bought a couple of spools of those variegated threads a while ago, I think you just inspired me to finally use them to make something, with a solid fabric =) I love May, because it's the start of spring, and after a long winter (I live in Ontario, Canada), it's always nice to have some sunshine, nice weather, a garden, and fresh produce at the market to look forward to. Thanks for the giveaway, I'd love to win the magazine!
ReplyDeleteI am going to say October. I live in Texas and it doesn't really start cooling down until then, but when it does I want to start spending every moment out side, go jogging since its cool and gets dark earlier, and just it starts off the holidays!
ReplyDeleteI would say April - I always get a little motivated as spring usually finally arrives - except this year, I'm still waiting in WI. p.s. I am working on my hoo-has - wow, I have a new respect for you:) So many needle pokes in my fingers...
ReplyDeleteWow, so many more entries than I expected :) Thanks for playing.
ReplyDelete@peaknits: get a couple thimbles! I never understood their purpose until I made the pouch. Huge help!
Late summer/early autumn is when I kick into creative gear. The weather is perfect during the evening (it gets FAR too hot upstairs in the summer to do any kind of crafting). I like to do major organizing in the spring, which makes me work on UFOs and finish up current WIPs.
ReplyDeletecrafty change is summer. the family i work for is away so i have more time. personal change is probably spring. the air seems alive with possibilities.
ReplyDeleteOoo..I like your post & your pouch..whatever the colour of the thread!
ReplyDeleteI think April inspires me the most..the coolness here in Australia kicks in & energy levels rise. Altho April seems to have disappeared in a flash this year.
I wish I could find a copy of Stitch here..might just have to buy it online.
The month that inspires change in me....I guess whatever month the sun starts to shine and the temperature gets warm enough to wear just a sweater and not a thick parka....is that May, or June, or August???? Seriously, I think the spring is the best time to start to change things.
ReplyDelete@robinde: the pouch in the post is not inset. It is a regular zipper installation where you sew it between the lining and the outer fabric. The hoo-ha pouch does have an inset zipper. Be warned - I didn't research how to add an inset zipper. I made it up. But it worked. Here's the link.
